Fluoxetine drug is a result of a research undertaken in the 1970’s by a group of scientist working for the Eli Lilly company to find a drug capable of hindering the serotonin reuptake in brain. This antidepressant works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain and helps in the growth of nerve cells responsible for controlling the mood.The drug made its debut in the year 1986 at the Belgian market and the FDA approved its usage in the year 1987. The FDA has approved its usage for disorders like major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa and panic disorder.
Prozac was the commercial name under which the fluoxetine drug was promoted but it was relaunched as Sarafem after the expiry of the patent in order to revive the sales. A patent allows the person having the patent to claim ownership of a product for a certain period of time. Thus, when the patent protecting the fluoxetine drug ended in the year 2001 the market were flooded with generic versions of the drug. These generic versions were created by manufacturers other than and were offered at a cheaper price. As the generic versions provided the same disadvantages and advantages of the original drug, the demand for Prozac dropped.
In an attempt to revive the popularity of the drug ,the drug was launched as Sarafem which was approved by the FDA to be used in the treatment of PMDD. Though there is no difference between Prozac and Sarafem in terms of chemicals structure and effects Prozac is not used to treat PMDD. Fluoxetine drug is placed under the classification of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor and is considered to be the safest inhibitor because of its least side effects. There are many more such inhibitors in the market but Fluoxetine is given preference.
